Carell Takes Carrey’s ‘Almighty’ Shoes

Way back in May of 2004 [story here] there were talks between Sony Pictures Entertainment, Universal Pictures and Spyglass Entertainment to bring the story of Bruce Almighty back to the big screen in the form of a sequel titled The Passion of the Ark based on the Bobby Florsheim/Josh Stolberg script.

There wasn’t much talk on the matter until now and the recent success of Steve Carell‘s 40 Year-Old Virgin seems to be the catalyst as Carell has made a deal to reprise his role in the film, and this time being the focus of heavenly talents.

The film was originally conceived for Jim Carrey, but Carrey declined the return thus spawning Evan Almighty as Carell will play the disfunctional anchorman Evan and will soon find himself inspired to build an ark in preparation for a great flood. The adapted script was penned by Steve Oedekerk.

Tom Shadyac, the director of Bruce Almighty, will return to direct the sequel with plans to begin filming early next year.

Morgan Freeman is currently in negotiations to reprise his role as God just don’t expect Carrey or Jennifer Aniston to be in the film at all.

In my honest opinion, when an actor makes it big he shouldn’t be taking roles that were left behind by others, and definitely not those left behind by Jim Carrey. I am not sure if Carell has checked the recent track record in the Carrey end trails as of late, but if he did he would find Son of the Mask and Dumb and Dumberer, thanks for those New Line.
