Marvel Comics has revealed plans to double the output of its current Iron Man title. Writer Joshua Williamson will steer two distinct story arcs involving Tony Stark simultaneously, with artists Carmen Carnero and Gleb Melnikov each handling separate chapters when the series shifts to a bi-weekly schedule this December. The publisher broke the news at the Avengers: Armageddon panel during Comic-Con International: San Diego 2026 (SDCC).

The accelerated rhythm resolves a scheduling challenge that arose earlier this year. Carnero had to step away partway through April’s Iron Man #4 after an injury. She has since recovered and claims the August issue as her full return. To sustain the faster cadence without overburdening one artist, Marvel recruited Melnikov as a second penciller. Both creators now draw their own arcs at the same time, rather than trading issues within a single storyline.
Carnero kicks off her new arc in December with Iron Man #12 under the banner Incarcerated Iron Man. The plot locks Tony Stark inside the Vault, now a super-prison commanded by Moonstone. Williamson framed the villain as a cerebral threat. “Moonstone is going to be the new warden of The Vault… she’s very psychological, she’s very much a femme fatale character… her going up against Tony really changed what I was building,” she explained (via The Popverse).
The split-narrative model taps into a format DC Comics tested during its 2016 “Rebirth” era, when the Wonder Woman series alternated between present-day and origin tales across its twice-monthly releases. For Iron Man, the structure allows the creative team to push forward without pause. At the current pace, the series reaches its legacy 700th numbering in April with Iron Man #20. Marvel’s social channels confirmed the move with a statement: “SOARING TO #700! As Tony Stark approaches his milestone 700th issue, ‘Iron Man’ will hit comic shops twice a month beginning in December and feature two new alternating story arcs from writer Joshua Williamson and artists Carmen Carnero and Gleb Melnikov. #MarvelSDCC.” A connecting variant cover by Melnikov accompanies the announcement.
