Cretton spoke about the live-action Naruto movie during an interview with Rolling Stone while promoting Spider-Man: Brand New Day. The interviewer asked about his initial approach to the project, given that it’s a big franchise like Spider-Man. “Honestly, no different than anything else that I’ve done,” Cretton responded. “The cool thing is I feel very connected to that character, and I have always felt that way.”
The filmmaker recalled meeting Naruto creator Masashi Kishimoto and how that “amplified that feeling of connection.” He added, “I think his journey in the story that we are going to tell is something that I find very personal, not only culturally, but emotionally.”
“His trajectory, his feelings of being an outsider, the feeling of having an ugliness or a monster or some part of you that you’re ashamed of, and then coming to realize that’s the part that makes you unique, that gives you your power, that is a story that feels very close to me,” further adding.
This suggests that Cretton’s adaptation will focus primarily on Naruto Uzumaki’s early years, likely drawing on the early chapters (Prologue — Land of Waves) of the original manga. The film will likely depict Naruto as an outcast before he makes friends and devotes himself to his aspiration of becoming the Hokage.
Cretton is developing the Naruto movie for Lionsgate, and the project has Kishimoto’s approval (ScreentRant). Recently, a global search began for actors to portray the main trio: Naruto Uzumaki, Sasuke Uchiha, and Sakura Haruno. The movie currently doesn’t have a release date.
