Hope Trailer Gives Horror Fans a Wild Monster Movie With Michael Fassbender

Na Hong-jin’s Hope blends action, sci-fi, and mysterious creatures in a wild trailer. The movie first premiered in a competition at Cannes earlier this year and received a six-minute standing ovation.

The logline reads, “In the remote South Korean village of Hope Harbor, police outpost chief Bum-seok and officer Sung-ae are called to find a mysterious creature that has wreaked havoc on the village. In the nearby forest, a coterie of local hunters, including Sung-ki, set out to track the beast and find themselves hunted instead. But all is not as it seems, and perceptions can be misleading. What begins as ignorance plants the seed of disaster, escalating through human conflict into a tragedy of cosmic proportions.”

What do we see in the Hope trailer?

The Hope trailer begins with two Korean officers examining a cow’s corpse. Imprinted on it are claw marks from a tiger-like beast.

The scene shifts to a hunter in a run-down village looking for signs of what caused the havoc, while another officer is seen driving around, devastated by what has become of the area. Hunters themselves are hunting the creature with shotguns, running between ravaged buildings, when a roar erupts, stopping them in their tracks. As the trailer progresses, the hunters are now the ones being hunted.

The movie will be Na’s first feature film after roughly a decade. He has previously worked on movies like The Chaser, The Wailing, and The Yellow Sea. It features Korean stars like Hwang Jung-Min (The Wailing), Hoyeon (Squid Game), Zo In-sung (Moving), and Eum Moon-suk (The Roundup).

The additional cast includes Michael Fassbender, Alicia Vikander, Taylor Russell, and Cameron Britton. Although they are not seen in the trailer, they appear in minor yet supporting roles in the movie. Alongside Na, the production team includes Saerom Kim and Saemi Kim. Jeongin Hong and Eugene Kim serve as executive producer and co-executive producer, respectively.
