Superman’s Original Motto Finally Returns After 5 Years on the Sidelines

Superman fans never expected one of the hero’s most recognizable phrases to make a comeback in such an unusual way. After disappearing from modern DC storytelling for years, the legendary slogan is finally being spoken once again. However, it is resurfacing in a different way.

One of Superman’s oldest traditions is finally returning

In 2021, DC made headlines when it officially retired Superman’s long-standing motto, “Truth, Justice, and the American Way.” The phrase had been associated with the character for decades. During DC FanDome, publisher and Chief Creative Officer Jim Lee announced that the slogan would be replaced with a more modern alternative: “Truth, Justice, and a Better Tomorrow.”

Following that decision, references to the original motto largely vanished from mainstream Superman comics. For years, readers rarely encountered the phrase that had once been inseparable from the Last Son of Krypton. Now, however, the classic slogan is unexpectedly returning through an upcoming DC comic centered on Bizarro.

According to preview pages from Bizarro: Year None #2, written by Kevin Smith and Eric Carrasco, the twisted Superman counterpart revives the original catchphrase during an interview with his world’s version of Lois Lane. When asked to share his famous motto, Bizarro confidently responds with “Truth, Justice, and the American Way,” bringing the retired slogan back into a published DC story for the first time in years (via ScreenRant).

The moment fits perfectly within the comic’s bizarre premise. The series follows Perry White and Jimmy Olsen after Bizarro kidnaps and transports them to his strange, backward world. In this distorted reality, Bizarro genuinely believes he is the real Superman, creating a series of absurd and often humorous situations.

The return of the original slogan reinforces the story’s central theme. Because Bizarro constantly misunderstands reality, his continued use of an outdated motto highlights how disconnected his world is from modern DC continuity.

The significance of the slogan extends far beyond comics. The phrase first gained prominence during the 1940 radio serial The Adventures of Superman, where it quickly became associated with the character’s ideals. It later reached even greater popularity through the 1950s television series of the same name starring George Reeves.
