Horror Sequel Based on Hit Video Game Is Already a Streaming Topper Post Debut

A horror sequel based on a hit video game, which struggled at the box office, has seen a resurgence on streaming. Within days of its arrival on Hulu, it found a new audience and became one of the most-watched films, consequently topping the charts.

Return to Silent Hill tops Hulu charts

As of June 16, 2026, Return to Silent Hill is the #1 movie on Hulu in the United States, according to data from FlixPatrol. It is also the top title in the overall category. Accordingly, the supernatural psychological horror surpasses all other movies and TV shows on the top 10 lists.

The film loosely adapts Konami’s 2001 video game, Silent Hill 2. It is also the third installment in the film series after 2012’s Silent Hill Revelation and 2006’s Silent Hill. The story follows James Sunderland, a broken man struggling with the fallout of his breakup with his girlfriend, Mary Crane. One day, he receives a mysterious letter from her urging him to return to Silent Hill, where they previously stayed together. Upon arriving, he encounters various strange figures that play on his troubled mental state.

Distributed by Iconic Events Releasing and Cineverse, the movie premiered in the United States on January 23, 2026. Meanwhile, Metropolitan Filmexport released it in France a few weeks later on February 4.

Following its release, the film grossed roughly $47 million globally against its estimated $23 million production budget (via Box Office Mojo). It also garnered largely negative critical and audience reception.

On Rotten Tomatoes, it holds an abysmal 18% rotten critical rating but a higher 28% audience score. Meanwhile, Metacritic has assigned it a “generally unfavorable” Metascore of 34. However, the user score is somewhat forgiving, albeit nowhere near positive, showing a 4.4 “mixed or average” rating. Elsewhere, IMDb users have given it 4/10 stars.

Christophe Gans, who directed 2006’s Silent Hill, helmed the movie. He also co-wrote the screenplay with Sandra Vo-Anh and William Schneider. Jeremy Irvine stars as James, while Hannah Emily Anderson pulls quadruple duty as Mary, Angela, Maria, and Moth Mary. The supporting cast includes Evie Templeton, Robert Strange, Pearse Egan, and Nicola Alexis, among others.
