Dwayne Johnson sported a striking black mohair tailcoat and a bow tie paired with a matching pleated skirt at his Met Gala appearance this year. The former wrestler and actor, who recently appeared in The Smashing Machine, explained that the custom-made look by designer Thom Browne was a nod to Polynesian culture.

Johnson explained that, in Polynesian culture, the “most masculine men” wear skirts. Additionally, the designer explained that the tailcoat featured more than 350 meters of hand-pleated silk ribbons in a “skeletal composition.” This added to the design’s visual appeal.

“I feel great!” Johnson said when journalists asked him about his look. “First, [Thom Browne’s team] sent the illustrations over and [asked], ‘Hey, is Deej going to be cool with this pleated skirt?’ And I was like, ‘Look, in our culture, Polynesian culture, we rock lavalavas, we rock skirts.’ The most masculine men, not that I’m one of them, but the most masculine men wear lavalavas and skirts,” he added (via Variety).

The 2026 Met Gala theme is “Fashion is Art.”

Beyoncé, Nicole Kidman, Venus Williams, and Anna Wintour are co-chairing this year’s event. Meanwhile, Anthony Vaccarello and Zoë Kravitz are heading the gala host committee. The committee also includes Sabrina Carpenter, Doja Cat, Gwendoline Christie, Alex Consani, Misty Copeland, Elizabeth Debicki, Lena Dunham, Paloma Elsesser, Lisa, Chloe Malle, Sam Smith, Teyana Taylor, Lauren Wasser, Anna Weyant, A’ja Wilson, and Yseult.
