Humane: Shudder Acquires Caitlin Cronenberg’s Dystopian Horror Debut

IFC Films and Shudder have acquired the U.S. rights for Humane; the debut film from Caitlin Cronenberg, daughter of horror icon David Cronenberg. A theatrical release date has also been confirmed.

Humane Brings Another Cronenberg to Our Screens

Caitlin Cronenberg is primarily an artist and photographer, but makes her directorial debut with a dark dystopian satire.

Humane takes place over a single day, mere months after a global ecological collapse has forced world leaders to take extreme measures to reduce the earth’s population. In a wealthy enclave, a recently retired newsman has invited his grown children to dinner to announce his intentions to enlist in the nation’s new euthanasia program. But when the father’s plan goes horribly awry, tensions flare and chaos erupts among his children.

The film stars Jay Baruchel, Emily Hampshire, and Peter Gallagher. Michael Sparaga writes and produces it.

“It’s thrilling that my directorial debut is being released by IFC Films and Shudder, two of the most fearless and supportive distributors out there,” said Cronenberg. “Scott Shooman and his team have such a keen understanding of horror films, and are the perfect partners to bring this genre-bending film to audiences.”

Caitlin follows brother Brandon Cronenberg into the world of film. Brandon made his directorial debut in 2012 with Antiviral. He followed that up with 2020’s Possessor and last year’s Infinity Pool.

The theatrical release date for Humane has been set as April 26, 2024. It will then make a streaming debut on Shudder later in the year.
