Spike Lee’s High and Low Remake Gets Working Title, Starts Production

Spike Lee‘s High and Low remake officially has a working title, with production on the film also now underway.

According to a recent report from World of Reel, Lee’s remake, which is set to star Denzel Washington and Halle Berry, is now in production under the working title “Highest 2 Lowest.” Filming is currently underway in New York City, with Matthew Libatique (Black Swan) also reported to have joined the film as cinematographer.

Originally released in 1963, High and Low is a police procedural drama from legendary director Akira Kurosawa. The film is often heralded as one of the best thrillers ever made, and pointed to as one of Kurosawa’s greatest films.

What is High and Low about?

“Toshiro Mifune stars as a wealthy industrialist whose family becomes the target of a ruthless kidnapper in Akira Kurosawa’s exemplary film noir,” reads the film’s synopsis. “Based on Ed McBain’s detective novel King’s Ransom, High and Low is both a riveting thriller and a brilliant commentary on contemporary Japanese society.”

A24 is set to produce and develop the remake, with Apple Original Films serving as a co-financier. A24 will release High and Low in theaters before it comes to Apple TV+ at a later date. Todd Black will produce for Escape Artists while Jason Michael Berman produces for Mandalay Pictures.
