Tyler Perry & Kelly Rowland On Her Lead Role in Mea Culpa

Mea Culpa director Tyler Perry and star Kelly Rowland recently spoke about her ability to step into the role of a leading lady in the Netflix movie.

Speaking with ComingSoon, the filmmaker described why he wanted to work with Rowland and his thoughts on how impressive she is in the lead role.

“I’ve been a fan of hers for a long time,” Perry revealed. “I wanted to work with her. She’s stunningly beautiful, so I knew the camera loved her in every shot, but I wanted to make sure that she could deliver. I’ve watched some things that she’d done over the past, and I knew it was all there. I just knew that she had to be in the right hands to be comfortable enough to bring it all out. I’m so proud of what she did. She’s truly a leading lady, and I’m hoping that everybody who sees it, every director out there who’s looking for someone to play a role, they’re calling her up.”

In another interview, Rowland herself delved into the process of leading the new legal thriller and expressed her gratefulness towards Perry.

“I was honored that Tyler [Perry] trusted me with that space,” she explained. “It was a journey. It was really a journey. I remember being very nervous at first, and the more I was there, the more I found my footing … I was grateful for Tyler as well. I can’t wait to do it again, for sure.”

What is Mea Culpa about?

“The steamy film, which arrives on Netflix on February 23, is about criminal defense attorney Mea Harper (Kelly Rowland), who takes on the murder case against Zyair Malloy (Trevante Rhodes), an artist accused of killing his girlfriend. As she tries to figure out if her cagy and seductive client is as innocent as he claims, Mea gets thrust into a world that’s both hot and dangerous,” the synopsis reads.
