Denzel Washington & Spike Lee to Remake Akira Kurosawa’s High and Low

Spike Lee and Denzel Washington are teaming up for an English language remake of the iconic 1963 Akira Kurosawa film High and Low.

Variety has reported that Washington and Lee are teaming up once again for the Kurosawa crime thriller remake. This would be the fifth movie that the duo worked on with one another and the first one in nearly two decades, as their last movie collaboration was the 2006 film Inside Man.

It will be written by Lee and Alan Fox, while Lee will also executive produce for 40 Acres And A Mule Filmworks alongside Peter Guber for Mandalay, Matthew Lindner at Juniper Productions, Katia Washington, and Chris Brigham.

A24 is set to produce and develop the remake, with Apple Original Films serving as a co-financier. A24 will release High and Low in theaters before it comes to Apple TV+ at a later date. Todd Black will produce for Escape Artists while Jason Michael Berman produces for Mandalay Pictures.

What is High and Low about?

“Toshiro Mifune stars as a wealthy industrialist whose family becomes the target of a ruthless kidnapper in Akira Kurosawa’s exemplary film noir,” reads the film’s synopsis. “Based on Ed McBain’s detective novel King’s Ransom, High and Low is both a riveting thriller and a brilliant commentary on contemporary Japanese society.”
