Minecraft Movie Cast Adds Jack Black to Video Game Adaptation

Another big name has joined the cast of the upcoming Minecraft movie, with Kung Fu Panda star Jack Black being the latest addition.

Deadline has revealed that Black is part of the video game adaptation‘s cast, joining fellow stars Jason Momoa, Emma Myers, Sebastian Eugene Hansen, and Danielle Brooks. No details about his character have been revealed at this time. This provides Black with another video game movie role, as he played the part of the villainous Bowser in last year’s The Super Mario Bros. Movie.

The Minecraft movie will be directed by Napoleon Dynamite’s Jared Hess. Further details about its plot and characters are still being kept under wraps. The untitled project will see Jason Momoa reunite with Dune producer Mary Parent, who is producing alongside Roy Lee.

The late Jill Messick is also receiving a producing credit for her work on the film prior to her passing in 2018. Producers are Jon Berg, Mary Parent, Cale Boyter, Torfi Frans Olafsson, and Vu Bui, with Todd Hallowell, Kayleen Walters, Brian Mendoza and Jonathan Spaihts executive producing.

When did the Minecraft video game come out?

The smash hit video game was released in 2011 and became a global phenomenon, selling over 300 million copies. Its success led to Microsoft acquiring Mojang for $2.5 billion. A film based on the series has been in the works for several years, with Shawn Levy and Rob McElhenney among those previously attached.
