Bullitt: Steven Spielberg Movie Starring Bradley Cooper Gets Positive Update

Producer Kristie Macosko Krieger has given an update about Steven Spielberg’s upcoming Bullitt movie starring Bradley Cooper.

Speaking with GamesRadar+ during a press tour for Cooper’s Maestro, Macosko Krieger touched on the current status of Spielberg’s Bullitt movie.

“I’m producing it. Steven [Spielberg] and Josh Singer, who is writing the script, they are working on the story,” she said. “I hope we have a script soon as the writers’ strike put us behind a bit. But they are working on it – I couldn’t tell you if it’s the next movie we are making as I don’t know at this point. I think that it will be a wildly entertaining film.”

What else do we know about Spielberg’s Bullitt movie?

In February 2022, Deadline broke the news that Spielberg was directing and producing a new Bullitt movie. Released in 1968, Bullitt is a well-known action thriller starring Steve McQueen; however, Spielberg’s film won’t be a direct remake and is rather described as a “new idea centered on the character” of Lt. Frank Bullitt.

“Senator Walter Chalmers (Robert Vaughn) is aiming to take down mob boss Pete Ross (Vic Tayback) with the help of testimony from the criminal’s hothead brother Johnny (Pat Renella), who is in protective custody in San Francisco under the watch of police lieutenant Frank Bullitt (Steve McQueen),” the synopsis for the 1968 movie reads. “When a pair of mob hitmen enter the scene, Bullitt follows their trail through a maze of complications and double-crosses. This thriller includes one of the most famous car chases ever filmed.”

McQueen’s son and granddaughter, Chad and Molly, both serve as executive producers on the movie. Cooper was cast as the titular character in November 2022.

Spielberg and Cooper both collaborated on Maestro, which is currently playing in select theaters before it hits Netflix on December 20, 2023. The Leonard Bernstein biopic was originally going to be directed by Spielberg (prior to that, Martin Scorsese was initially going to helm the film); however, Spielberg offered the job to Cooper after watching 2018’s A Star is Born.
