Thunderbolts Is Not a ‘Straightforward Marvel Movie,’ Says Wyatt Russell

Wyatt Russell is set to star in the upcoming Marvel Studios film Thunderbolts after his appearance in The Falcon and The Winter Soldier. According to the actor, the movie won’t be your typical MCU film.

Speaking to 92NY (via The Hollywood Reporter) this week, Russell briefly talked about the upcoming movie, which he says won’t be as “straightforward” as other Marvel movies.

“I have confidence it’s gonna be good,” Wyatt said. “I know everybody is sort of on this Marvel train right now of things not going so well. I know [director Jake Schreier] so well and I know how smart Jake is and how much he cares about making something interesting and different and utilizing everyone’s talents to the best of their ability. And the story that I think they’ve come up with is really interesting — I know parts of the story and how the story works, I can’t talk about it.”

“But it’s not a straightforward Marvel movie as you’ve seen in the past,” Wyatt continued. “I think that it’s gonna be a lot of fun but I think it will be something that hopefully Marvel fans will look at and go, ‘Oh OK, this is a little different, let’s go hard at it.’ And as far as how we are approaching it, it’s time to go to work a little bit, it’s time to make a good Marvel movie, so let’s do that and work hard at it and don’t take things for granted.”

Who is in Thunderbolts?

During the Marvel Studios’ panel at D23, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige unveiled the cast for the upcoming Thunderbolts movie, which will be a team consisting of mostly supervillains and antiheroes.

It includes Contessa Valentina Allegra de Fontaine (Julia Louis-Dreyfus), Red Guardian (David Harbour), Ghost (Hannah Jon-Kamen), US Agent (Wyatt Russell), Taskmaster (Olga Kerleynko), Yelena Belova/Black Widow (Florence Pugh), and The Winter Soldier (Sebastian Stan).

The film will be directed by Jake Schreier, whose history as a director isn’t extremely extensive, having only worked on 2012’s Robot & Frank, 2015’s Paper Towns, and the 2021 filmed version of Chance the Rapper’s Magnificent Coloring World Tour.
