Trick ‘r Treat 2 Is Still in ‘Active Development,’ Will Introduce a New Nemesis for Sam

Michael Dougherty says Trick ‘r Treat 2 is still in “active development” and will introduce a brand-new nemesis for Sam.

Speaking with Collider following a screening of Trick ‘r Treat, Dougherty offered an update about the long-awaited sequel to the iconic Halloween horror flick released in 2007.

“I will say this, because we said it last year at the Beyond Fest screening, the sequel is in active development with Legendary,” Dougherty said. “I’ll go so far as to say that we have several drafts of a script. I brought back the same storyboard artist I mentioned before, Simeon Wilkins, so we have a stack of storyboards and a good fat stack of concept art done by Breehn Burns as well. So it’s inching along. I’m hoping to talk to Legendary. They’ve been wonderful, like great collaborators. But so much of it is timing, and as you know, we just got out of a strike, so the next step, fingers crossed, would be looking at budget, of course, schedule, and all the rest. But we have a really, really great script for a sequel. And I brought in my co-writer from Krampus to do it with me. So Zach Shields and Todd Casey who do Krampus with me also helped me write Trick ‘r Treat Part 2.”

Dougherty clarified that Trick ‘r Treat Part 2 is just a working title for the movie at this time; however, he added that it will introduce “a proper nemesis for Sam that would give Brian Cox a run for his money.”

Will other Trick ‘r Treat characters return for the sequel?

When asked if other Trick ‘r Treat characters apart from Sam could return for the sequel, Doughtery said, “Anything is possible, but I definitely prefer leaning into the idea that every sequel would stand alone. That would bring a new cast of characters with Sam being sort of the consistent one among them all.”

Buzz surrounding Trick ‘r Treat 2 first emerged shortly after the release of Trick ‘r Treat. At one point, a sequel was announced; however, nothing ever came of it following a change in Legendary Pictures’ management. Speaking at Beyond Fest in 2022, Doughtery said that, while it hadn’t been officially greenlit by the studio at this time, Trick ‘R Treat 2 was finally in “very active development.”
