Reese Witherspoon says she doesn’t want to make any more “dark” projects because people like seeing her in “light” movies.
Speaking at Hello Sunshine’s Shine Away event with Mindy Kaling, Jennifer Garner, and Tracee Ellis Ross, Witherspoon said, via The Hollywood Reporter, that she doesn’t have a desire to star in any dark, intense, or horror-centric movies.
“I’m not meant to be doing dark, heavy, intense, horror, gore, darkness movies,” she said. “People like to see me do light movies, and I was like, OK. It doesn’t put you in the cool kids club a lot but I don’t care, I don’t want to be in the cool kids club. I want to make optimistic stuff that makes girls excited to be women in this world, because it is a wonderful thing to be a woman in this world.”

Perhaps best known for starring in the Legally Blonde films, Witherspoon made her feature film debut in 1991’s The Man in the Moon. She became a common household name after 1999’s Cruel Intentions and 1999’s Election.
Throughout the majority of her career, Witherspoon has starred in romantic comedies such as 2002’s Sweet Home Alabama, 2005’s Just like Heaven, 2008’s Four Christmases, 2012’s This Means War, and more. Witherspoon has worked on a handful of darker projects before. She played a victimized teenager alongside Kiefer Sutherland in the Oliver Stone-produced Freeway in 1996 before she then went on to star alongside Christian Bale in 2000’s American Psycho. Witherspoon also produced 2014’s Gone Girl, 2019’s Lucy in the Sky, and 2022’s Where the Crawdads Sing.
