Fran Drescher ‘Shocked’ by SAG-AFTRA Negotiation Breakdown

During a recent appearance on the Today show, SAG-AFTRA president Fran Drescher called the recent breakdown in negotiation between SAG-AFTRA and the AMPTP “wrong” and “disrespectful.”

Drescher calls out AMPTP reps for not listening

“It really came as a shock to me because what does that exactly mean and why would you walk away from the table,” Drescher said (via Deadline). “It’s not like we’re asking for anything that’s so outrageous. It’s so wrong. And it’s so unfair that they walked out of the meeting, and so disrespectful.”

Drescher went on to say that during her time in meetings, she’s noticed that AMPTP representatives “talk at you – they really don’t want to hear what you have to say or why you’re saying it.”

Her comments come just a few days after talks between the union and the AMPTP broke down on Wednesday and were suspended. According to reports on the matter, talks broke down after the AMPTP declined SAG-AFTRA’s proposals to share 2% of streaming revenue. Netflix CEO Ted Sarandos acknowledged the reports by noting that the move was a “bridge too far” for the union.

While Sarandos said that the AMPTP had offered the union “a first-of-its-kind success-based residual” plan for subscription-based productions, it doesn’t seem like SAG-AFTRA believed the deal to be good enough. As a result, talks between SAG-AFTRA and the AMPTP have stalled and don’t seem to be ready to continue anytime soon.
