Transformers Movie Update Given by Blue Beetle Director Ángel Manuel Soto

Blue Beetle director Ángel Manuel Soto says his Transformers movie is still being developed but has been delayed because of the writers’ strike.

Speaking with Collider, Soto offered an update about a new Transformers movie he was tapped to direct.

“I pitched them an idea,” he said. “I read a script, I didn’t like it, and I pitched them a whole different idea, and they liked it, but then it was too late. So they told me, ‘Yeah, we cannot do your idea, but we like your idea, so we want you to write the idea and then direct it.’ So, we’ve been in that process, but the writers’ strike happened. [Laughs] It will be different, it will be different.”

In March 2021, Paramount hired Soto to direct a new film in the Transformers universe. At the time, Marco Ramirez was also announced as the writer. News on the project has been relatively quiet since then, as plot details or casting announcements have not been revealed.

In May 2023, the Writer’s Guild of America (WGA) went on strike in an effort to secure better working conditions, fair pay, protection against A.I., and more. The Screen Actors Guild – American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA) then declared a strike in June 2023, which has caused production on most Hollywood projects to shut down.

Multiple new Transformers movies are in the works

There are currently seven movies in Paramount’s Transformers franchise, including 2007’s Transformers, 2009’s Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, 2011’s Transformers: Dark of the Moon, 2014’s Transformers: Age of Extinction, 2017’s Transformers: The Last Knight, 2018’s Bumblebee, and 2023’s Transformers: Rise of the Beasts

Paramount is planning to release Transformers One, an animated prequel film directed by Josh Cooley, in September 2024. Additionally, a Transformers: Rise of the Beasts and G.I. Joe crossover is in the works.

Blue Beetle is currently playing in theaters.
