Tom Cruise Explains Why Mission: Impossible 7 Bike Stunt Was Filmed First

Actor Tom Cruise has explained why the motorcycle stunt was the first thing they filmed for Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part One.

The Mission: Impossible movies have been known for their famous stunts. From Cruise scaling the Burj Khalifa in Ghost Protocol to jumping out of a plane 25,000 feet in Fallout, he has pulled off the most incredible death-defying feats. One of the most jaw-dropping moments in the latest film is a sequence where Ethan Hunt rides a motorcycle off a cliff, and in typical Cruise fashion, he pulls it off for real.

This scene was the first thing they filmed in the movie. Cruise told Entertainment Tonight about this choice. “Well we know either we will continue with the film or we’re not. Let’s know day one! Let us know day one what is going to happen: Do we all continue or is it a major rewrite?”

Director Christopher McQuarrie told Empire about the decision. “Doing that on Day One gave us all the time in the world to understand why he [Ethan] was doing what he was doing. If we sat around and tried to figure out these movies the old-fashioned way, you’d never find it, simply because it’s such a living, breathing thing.”

When does Mission: Impossible 7 come out?

Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part One releases on July 12, 2023, by Paramount Pictures.

The cast includes many familiar faces such as Tom Cruise, Ving Rhames, Simon Pegg, Rebecca Ferguson, Vanessa Kirby, and Henry Czerny reprises his role from the original Mission: Impossible. New cast members include Hayley Atwell, Esai Morales, Shea Whigham, Pom Klementieff, and Cary Elwes.

“Ethan Hunt and the IMF team must track down a terrifying new weapon that threatens all of humanity if it falls into the wrong hands,” reads the official synopsis. “With control of the future and the fate of the world at stake, a deadly race around the globe begins. Confronted by a mysterious, all-powerful enemy, Ethan is forced to consider that nothing can matter more than the mission — not even the lives of those he cares about most.”
