John Wick: Chapter 5 in Development at Lionsgate

John Wick: Chapter 5 and 3 Spin-offs in Development at Lionsgate

After over two months since the theatrical release of John Wick: Chapter 4, Lionsgate executive Joe Drake has confirmed that the studio has started work on John Wick: Chapter 5, which is currently in the early stages of development.

During Lionsgate’s most recent earnings call (via Comicbook), Drake opened up about the future of the blockbuster franchise, revealing that the creative team has three other John Wick projects in development.

“We’re now moving across that franchise, not just in the AAA video game space, but looking at what the regular cadence of spin-offs, television really growing that universe so that there is a steady cadence of a franchise that there’s clear appetite by the audience,” Drake said. “What is official is that, as you know, Ballerina is the first spinoff that comes out next year. We’re in development on three others, including [John Wick: Chapter 5] and including television series, The Continental, will be airing soon. And so, we’re building out the world and when that five movie comes, will be organic — will be organically grown out of how we’re starting to tell those stories. But you can rely on a regular cadence of John Wick.”

This John Wick: Chapter 5 revelation comes after John Wick: Chapter 4 director Chad Stahelski confirmed that he and leading star Keanu Reeves are definitely not saying no to the opportunity to tell more of the titular assassin’s story. Before this, Stahelski previously expressed that they were planning to take a break from the franchise.

John Wick Franchise Reaches $1 Billion

John Wick: Chapter 4 has earned a worldwide gross of over $428 million at the box office, making it the highest-grossing John Wick movie. This achievement allowed the franchise to reach the billion-dollar mark at the worldwide box office.

“John Wick (Keanu Reeves) uncovers a path to defeating The High Table,” reads the synopsis for Chapter 4. “But before he can earn his freedom, Wick must face off against a new enemy with powerful alliances across the globe and forces that turn old friends into foes.”

John Wick: Chapter 4 was directed by Stahelski from a screenplay co-written by Shay Hatten and Michael Finch, who is taking over from franchise creator Derek Kolstad. The fourth installment starred Reeves, Lance Reddick, Ian McShane, Rina Sawayama, Shamier Anderson, Bill Skarsgard, Clancy Brown, Hiroyuki Sanada, and Donnie Yen.
