Why an Original The Little Mermaid Song Was Cut in Live-Action Remake

Disney‘s upcoming The Little Mermaid adaptation features a ton of iconic songs from the original animated film. However, composer Alan Menken recently revealed why one The Litte Mermaid song from the original didn’t make the cut.

Which The Little Mermaid song was cut from the live-action The Little Mermaid?

Speaking to Comicbook.com, Menken explained why the song “Daughters of Triton” didn’t make it into the new movie. According to Menken, the song simply didn’t fit in the live-action version. He also noted that they wanted audiences to wait a bit before hearing the iconic “Part of Your World.”

“I think the thought process was a) we didn’t it need in this particular version,” Menken said. “And we definitely wanted the film to start with a much more of a live-action feel of the ocean and meeting Ariel, and then we wait a little bit, make you wait until we get to ‘Part of Your World.’ And I think that was, you know, it was an amazing choice because it just builds the power and anticipation.”

Menken continued by saying he wanted the buildup to “Part of Your World” to be meaningful and worth the wait.

“And part of that is also knowing you’re adapting something that’s already beloved. So you want to say, wait for it, wait for it, wait for it, and here it is. And when it comes, god.”

Alongside “Daughters of Triton,” the live-action The Little Mermaid film also has the song “Les Poissons” cut from its soundtrack. That song was originally sung by Chef Louie after capturing Sebastian in kitchen. Instead, a handful of new songs made by Menken and Lin-Manuel Miranda specifically for this version of the film will be included.

The Little Mermaid is set to premiere on May 26, 2023.
