Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 Is About the Group ‘Saving Themselves’

The Guardians of the Galaxy franchise has often featured the group of misfit heroes saving the day or even the universe. However, according to director James Gunn, the upcoming third film, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, is more about the group looking inward.

Speaking to Empire Magazine, Gunn said that the focus on this film is not so much about the group having this massive villain to defeat, but instead is a more intimate, emotional film, saying that it’s “not about saving the universe – it’s about the Guardians saving themselves.”

“It is a trilogy,” explains Gunn. “The first movie is about the mother, the second movie is about the father, and the third movie is about the self. That is the overall story.”

Gunn’s comments echo those he made earlier in the month, saying that the upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is about the group of heroes coming to terms with themselves and that the third film is more about accepting yourself and diving into what makes people who they are.

“In Marvel Studios‘ Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 our beloved band of misfits are looking a bit different these days,” reads the synopsis. “Peter Quill, still reeling from the loss of Gamora, must rally his team around him to defend the universe along with protecting one of their own. A mission that, if not completed successfully, could quite possibly lead to the end of the Guardians as we know them.”

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is once again written and directed by James Gunn. MCU vets Pratt, Zoe Saldaña, Dave Bautista, Sean Gunn, Karen Gillan, Pom Klementieff, Bradley Cooper, and Vin Diesel are returning to reprise their respective roles as Star-Lord, Gamora, Drax, Kraglin, Nebula, Mantis, Rocket, and Groot. The threequel will also include the introduction of franchise newcomers Will Poulter, Chukwudi Iwuji, and Maria Bakalova, who have signed on for the roles of Adam Warlock, High Evolutionary, and Cosmo the Spacedog.
