Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein Eyes Andrew Garfield, Oscar Isaac, & More

Fresh off of his Oscar-winning take on Pinocchio, Guillermo del Toro is ready for his next live-action film, with Deadline reporting that Andrew Garfield, Oscar Isaac, and Mia Goth are all in talks to star in del Toro’s adaptation of Frankenstein for Netflix.

The film will see del Toro write and direct the feature, with Deadline noting that he is currently writing the script and hasn’t officially given any offers to any actors. However, the report mentions that the legendary filmmaker has met with all three actors and each of them is on board to star, should an offer be made.

Del Toro’s Frankenstein has been in development for some time and seems like a perfect match for the director, who has always explored the world of horror throughout many of his films. It’s currently unclear whether or not his take on the iconic Mary Shelley story will be set as a period piece or will be a modern-day tale, nor who would be playing Doctor Frankenstein and his creation. However, Mia Goth is said to be eyed for the role of Doctor Frankenstein’s love interest.

Oscar Isaac most recently starred in the HBO series Scenes From a Marriage, as well as the Marvel Studios Disney+ series Moon Knight. He’ll also play writer Kurt Vonnegut in the upcoming Amazon limited series Helltown.

Andrew Garfield most recently starred in the critically acclaimed crime series Under the Banner of Heaven and is also set to star alongside Florence Pugh in the upcoming film We Live in Time.

Mia Goth’s history in horror has been a busy one, as she recently starred in the A24 horror film X, its prequel Pearl, and will star in the third entry in the series, MaXXXine. She also led 2023’s Infinity Pool alongside Alexander Skarsgård.

As for del Toro, the filmmaker’s latest film, Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio, was a stop-motion reimagining of the classic Italian novel The Adventures of Pinocchio by Carlo Collodi. The film earned massive praise and just recently won the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature, as well as a litany of other awards. Prior to that, he directed the 2021 film Nightmare Alley, as well as 2017’s The Shape of Water, which went on to win Best Picture at the 90th Academy Awards.
