James Gunn Clarifies DC Misconceptions, Will Never Lie to Fans

DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn has been an open book of sorts on social media, and in a recent string of tweets, Gunn once again tried to clarify some misconceptions about what the future holds for the DC Universe.

In a series of tweets on Wednesday, Gunn replied to a fan that called the filmmaker “a professional liar.” Gunn said that “for years” he’s been committed to the fans, and “will never lie to them,” and never has, as far as he’s concerned.

When another fan shared a group of screenshots showcasing past comments Gunn made about not directing a Superman film or wanting a job like Kevin Feige or Walter Hamada at Marvel and DC, respectively, Gunn clarified in a reply.

Gunn noted that neither of those were lies at the time, as he was offered the chance to make a Superman film, but instead chose to make 2021’s The Suicide Squad instead. As for his comments about not wanting to run DC, he said that he never wanted to be “the sole CEO of DC,” but once Warner Bros. Discovery offered him the role alongside co-CEO Peter Safran, he took it, because it would allow him to “focus on the creative side.”

In a follow-up tweet, Gunn said while he never will lie about anything, that doesn’t mean he won’t change his mind about things from time to time.

The DC Universe’s first phase, called Chapter One: Gods and Monsters, will feature a multitude of different movies and television shows. A few of the announced projects include a Batman and Robin-focused movie called The Brave and the Bold, a Supergirl movie titled Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, a Swamp Thing film, and multiple TV shows.
