Speaking to ComicBook on the film, Lawrence said that while there haven’t been any official talks to return to the project, he has spoken with writer Akiva Goldsman, who will return for the sequel, and that he’d love to direct the film if given the chance.

“I have spoken to Akiva [Goldsman] a little bit about it, but I think that is still a ways away. I’d love to do it,” Lawrence said. “I’ve heard some things about I Am Legend. We actually don’t have much, just brainstorming things for Constantine, but I’m sworn to secrecy on I Am Legend.”

Since the announcement of a sequel, no director has been tapped to helm the project, leaving it up in the air as to who will take on the responsibility. While Lawrence does seem to want the chance to direct the sequel, it remains to be seen just who eventually is given the task.

The original film, which was based on the 1954 novel of the same name by Richard Matheson, was a hit when it premiered in 2007. The film opened to the largest-ever box office for a non-Christmas film at the time and was the seventh-highest-grossing film of 2007. Currently, nothing is known about the sequel of the film other than the return of Smith and Goldsman, as well as Jordan’s involvement to star.
