Space Channel 5 and Comix Zone Film Adaptations Are Incoming

Sega Announces Space Channel 5 and Comix Zone Film Adaptations

Sega is not done putting its video game franchises on the silver screen. The company is making films based on the Genesis beat-em-up Comix Zone and the Dreamcast music title Space Channel 5, which are games that released in 1995 and 1999, respectively.

The Hollywood Reporter’s report (which Sega also confirmed in a press release) notes that Picturestart is developing the pair of films. Space Channel 5 is going to be a “comedy/dance adaptation” of the game and be about a fast food worker who has been recruited by a reporter from the future to save the world using “silly viral dances.” Barry Battles and Nir Paniry are set to write the film.

Comix Zone is going to follow a jaded comic creator and a young, queer writer of color after they get sucked into the final issue of a comic series. The two will have to work together to escape and stop a supervillain. The report states that it will also “wittily explore the ever-evolving art of storytelling itself.” Mae Catt is writing this film and is most known for DC’s Young Justice and Dragons: The Nine Realms.

Picturestart’s Royce Reeves-Darby, Erik Feig, and Samie Kim Falvey are set to produce the films alongside Sega’s Toru Nakahara. Takumi Yoshinaga and Kagasei Shimomura, who are also from Sega, are going to join the teams for Space Channel 5 and Comix Zone, respectively. Yoshinaga was a writer on the first two Space Channel games and the story and game design advisor for the 2020 VR title. Shimomura didn’t work on Comix Zone, but has been a part of many Sega games like Vanquish, Bayonetta, and Sonic Origins to name a few.
