Aubrey Plaza Would Love to Play Lara Croft in Tomb Raider

While the status of a new Tomb Raider film is up in the air, actress Aubrey Plaza has recently thrown her hat in the ring to potentially star in the film.

Following MGM’s loss of the rights to the Tomb Raider franchise, a new film with a new actress in the role of Lara Croft has been a hot topic as of late. Last week, director Edgar Wright kickstarted things by saying that after seeing a recent poster for Plaza’s new film Emily the Criminal, he thought she had gotten the role of Lara Croft, and congratulated her, only to find out she hadn’t yet.

Speaking to Newsweek earlier this week, Plaza asked if she would ever step into the role of the adventurer, Plaza said she loves the thought of it, and commented on just how strikingly similar she looked to Croft in the Emily the Criminal poster.

“Look, I have no idea what the future holds for me, but I love it,” Plaza said. “It was so funny when he texted me that because I didn’t realize how strikingly similar those photos are. Emily is carrying a purse strap and Lara Croft has a gun holster, those are very different. But it’s very weird and totally accidental, but I’ll take it.”

According to a report from TheWrap, MGM had until May to greenlight a sequel to the 2018 Tomb Raider film in an effort to retain the rights to the franchise. They didn’t, which vacated the rights and essentially set off a chain reaction that has led to many of the biggest studios in the world looking to snatch up the rights, although no official names have been mentioned as of yet.
