Big Little Lies & Dallas Buyers Club Director Jean-Marc Vallée Passes Away at 58

Canadian filmmaker Jean-Marc Vallée has unexpectedly passed away at the age of just 58.

Vallée’s representative revealed that the director died suddenly while in his cabin over the holidays. He passed away outside Quebec City, Canada, this weekend. Other details surrounding Vallée’s death remain sparse.

Vallée made his feature directorial debut in 1995 with Black List and found global critical acclaim in 2013 after directing Dallas Buyers Club. The biographical drama starring Matthew McConaughey was nominated for six Academy Awards including Best Picture, Best Actor, Best Supporting Actor, Best Original Screenplay, Best Film Editing, and Best Makeup and Hairstyling. It wound up winning three Academy Awards: Best Actor for McConaughey, Best Supporting Actor for Jared Leto, and Best Makeup and Hairstyling for Adruitha Lee and Robin Mathews.

Most recently, Vallée has found success on television. He directed the first season of HBO’s Big Little Lies and served as executive director, and then directed the television miniseries Sharp Objects. His final two features were 2014’s Wild starring Reese Witherspoon and Demolition starring Jake Gyllenhaal and Naomi Watts.
