Cate Blanchett-Led Drama Tár Gets Release Date, Adds Seven to Cast

According to Deadline, Mark Strong (The Imitation Game), Noémie Merlant (Portrait of a Lady on Fire), Nina Hoss (Homeland), Julian Glover (Game of Thrones), Allan Corduner (Yentl), Sophie Kauer, and Sylvia Flote have officially been tapped to join Todd Field’s feature directorial comeback titled Tár. The story will be set in the international world of classical music.

In addition to the casting news, Focus Features has also announced the release date for the Cate Blanchett-led drama film. It is currently slated to arrive in theaters on October 7, 2022, pitting it directly against a high-profile animated film in the form of Sony Pictures’ Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse 2.

Tár will be led by Oscar-winning actress Cate Blanchett, who has signed on for the leading role of Lydia Tár, an orchestra conductor widely considered one of the greatest at her craft and the first-ever female chief conductor of a major German orchestra.

Acclaimed Icelandic composer Hildur Guðnadóttir has also boarded the project to compose the film’s score. She is best known as the first female composer to win an Oscar and a Golden Globe for her work on 2019’s Joker.

Tár is being written and directed by Todd Field, who is making his comeback after a 15-year hiatus since the critical success of Little Children. It is produced by Field, Alexandra Milchan, and Scott Lambert. Production is currently underway in Berlin.

Field is best known for his directorial work in critically-acclaimed films, 2001’s In the Bedroom and 2006’s Little Children, which both earned multiple Academy Awards nominations. Meanwhile, Blanchett will next be seen in high-profile films such as Netflix’s Don’t Look Up, Guillermo del Toro’s noir thriller Nightmare Alley, and the live-action film adaptation of Borderlands.
