Jonah Hill to Play Jerry Garcia in Martin Scorsese’s Grateful Dead Movie

Oscar nominee Jonah Hill (The Wolf of Wall Street, Moneyball, Don’t Look Up) is set to star as the late Jerry Garcia in Oscar-winning filmmaker Martin Scorsese’s movie about the rock band Grateful Dead, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Scorsese is currently working on the Killers of the Flower Moon crime drama adaptation starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Robert De Niro for Apple, which is where the Grateful Dead project is set up at. Apple, who has a first-look film and TV deal with Scorsese via his Sikelia Productions banner, has reportedly acquired the rights to use the band’s music in the film.

Dolemite Is My Name and Big Eyes scribes Scott Alexander and Larry Karaszewski co-wrote the screenplay.

Hill and Scorcese will be reteaming after previously working together on The Wolf of Wall Street and will both produce the feature. Rick Yorn will also serve as producer, with Bob Weir, Phil Lesh, Mickey Hart, Bill Kreutzmann, Trixie Garcia, Eric Eisner, and Bernie Cahill executive producing.

Scorcese previously executive produced the 2017 documentary Long Strange Trip that explored the band’s 30-year career from 1965-1995.
