Report: Grand Theft Auto Remasters Incoming, Red Dead Redemption Possible

Rockstar is used to re-releasing its games on multiple platforms. And, according to a new report, the giant developer is currently on the cusp of releasing remasters of the PS2-era Grand Theft Auto games onto modern hardware. This includes Grand Theft Auto III, Vice City, and San Andreas. The report also states that the first Red Dead Redemption is also another candidate, but its release depends on the success of the GTA remasters.

Kotaku published this report. Their sources, who have been accurate in the past, detail that these remasters are more than the simple ports Rockstar usually does. In past generations, Rockstar has only put ports on new systems that look almost identical to the original releases, except for the higher resolution. These alleged remasters will apparently have a mix of “new and old graphics” thanks to the Unreal Engine. One of the sources even said they looked like heavily modded versions of the games. The UI will also retain its style in the transition, but will be slightly updated. Gameplay, on the other hand, is said to still be faithful to the PS2 originals.

While the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S versions of GTAV are coming out on November 11, these remasters are also slated to come out in October or November on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, PC, Google Stadia, and mobile device. However, the PC and mobile iterations will probably slide into 2022 as lead developer Rockstar Dundee prioritizes the other versions. They’re also said to only be available digitally in one package so it sounds like users can’t pick and choose what ones they want.

Rockstar is also reportedly fiddling with the idea of remastering Red Dead Redemption, too. The same report says there are plans to make new ports of that 2011 open-world classic, but it is contingent upon the performance of the GTA remasters.
