For years, an animated movie based on the iconic Nintendo franchise has been in development, but fans haven’t heard too much regarding it. Speaking to comedian Bert Kreischer on the podcast (via Nintendo Wire), however, Maniscalco said that later in the day he would be recording lines for Foreman Spike in the movie.

“I’m in the movie Super Mario Bros., the animated movie playing Spike, their boss,” he said.

For those unaware, Foreman Spike is, as Maniscalco says, the “boss” of Mario and Luigi that appears in the 1985 NES game Wrecking Crew, as well as the Japan release Wrecking Crew ’98. Spikes appearances in the game come as someone who tries to hinder Mario at all turns, and someone who the player has to compete with during certain bonus stages as well.

Not too much else is known about the Super Mario Bros. film, other than that the creator of Mario, Shigeru Miyamoto, would be producing the film alongside Illumination’s Chris Meledandri. For the time being, it seems as if the companies behind the film are content with keeping things very tight-lipped before a potential release sometime in 2022.
