The Lost Daughter: Netflix Nabs Maggie Gyllenhaal’s Directorial Debut Pic

According to Deadline, Netflix has successfully acquired the North American distribution rights to Oscar nominee Maggie Gyllenhaal’s upcoming directorial debut film titled The Lost Daughter. The streamer has also nabbed the rights to other worldwide territories excluding the UK, Benelux, Germany, South Africa, Italy, Spain, Greece, South Korea, Switzerland, Iceland, Poland, Turkey, Scandinavia, Portugal, Israel, Indonesia, and the Middle East.

The acquisition comes ahead of the Olivia Colman-led drama’s upcoming world premiere at the 2021 Venice Film Festival next month. The film is based on Elena Ferrante’s 2006 novel of the same name.

“I’m thrilled to be working with Netflix again,” Gyllenhaal said in a statement. “They have supported so much of the work I am most proud of, and this is no exception. Netflix has consistently championed filmmakers that excite and inspire me and I’m delighted to be included in that company.”

The Lost Daughter is written and directed by Maggie Gyllenhaal. It will be led by Olivia Colman (The Crown), Dakota Johnson (Peanut Butter Falcon), Jessie Buckley (Wild Rose), Peter Sarsgaard (Shattered Glass), and Paul Mescal (Normal People). Joining them are Oliver Jackson-Cohen (The Invisible Man), Ed Harris (Westworld), and Dagmara Domińczyk (Succession).

Ferrante’s novel begins with Leda (Colman), a middle-aged divorcée and a college English professor who goes on a beach vacation after her two daughters left her to visit their father in Canada. The story explores the conflicting emotions between a mother’s relationship toward her children.

The official book synopsis reads: “When her daughters leave home, Leda anticipates a period of loneliness and longing. Instead, slightly embarrassed by the sensation, she feels liberated, as if her life has become lighter, easier. She decides to take a holiday by the sea, in a small coastal town in southern Italy. But after a few days of calm and quiet, things begin to take a menacing turn. Leda encounters a family whose brash presence proves unsettling, at times even threatening. When a small, seemingly meaningless, event occurs, Leda is overwhelmed by memories of the difficult and unconventional choices she made as a mother and their consequences for herself and her family. The apparently serene tale of a woman’s pleasant rediscovery of herself soon becomes the story of a ferocious confrontation with an unsettled past.”
