There are two more sales announcements coming out of the market at the Cannes Film Festival as the Weinstein Company is closing a deal for John Erick Dowdle’s thriller The Coup, starring Pierce Brosnan and Owen Wilson, while Kate Barker-Froyland’s film Song One, starring Anne Hathaway, is likely to be picked up by Cinedigm for release by Film Arcade in the United States.
The latest film from Dowdle, director of the horror films Quaratine, Devil and the upcoming As Above, So Below, is a thriller set in Thailand that follows an American family there who get caught up in a violent coup when rebels attack the city. It co-stars Michelle Monaghan and Lake Bell.
This would be the second movie produced by Bold Films to sell at Cannes by Sierra/Infinity in the last 24 hours, following the announcement of Open Road picking up Jake Gyllenhaal’s Nightcrawlers. Apparently, there was a similar bidding frenzy for Dowdle’s latest before the Weinstein Company offered $5 million for the North American rights.
In Song One, which premiered at Sundance earlier this year to mixed reviews, Hathaway plays an archeologist named Franny who returns home after her brother is put into a coma after a hit and run and begins a relationship with his favorite musician.
