Garrett Hedlund (TRON: Legacy, Triple Frontier, Mudbound) has joined Daisy Ridley (Star Wars franchise, Chaos Walking, Murder on the Orient Express) and Emmy winner Ben Mendelsohn (BloodlineRogue One: A Star Wars StoryThe Outsider) in Neil Burger’s upcoming psychological thriller The Marsh King’s Daughter, based on Karen Dionne’s bestselling novel, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Details on Hedlund’s character have not yet been released.

The Marsh King’s Daughter follows a woman, Helena Pelletier (Ridley) living a seemingly ordinary life with her husband and young daughter but hiding a dark secret within: that her father is the infamous “Marsh King,” aka Jacob Holbrook (Mendelsohn), the man who kept Helena and her mother captive in the wilderness for years. Helena is forced to face her demons when her father unexpectedly escapes from prison. Knowing that he will hunt for her and her family, Helena must find the strength to confront her past and the man she once idolized.

The project is currently shooting in Canada with Burger (Limitless, The Illusionist) directing from an adapted screenplay by Elle Smith and Mark L. Smith (The Revenant, Midnight SkyOverlord). The movie, from STXfilms, Black Bear Pictures, and Anonymous Content, also stars Brooklynn Prince, Gil Birmingham, and Caren Pistorius.

The film is produced by Black Bear Pictures’ Teddy Schwarzman (The Imitation GameI Care a Lot), Anonymous Content’s Keith Redmon (The RevenantMidnight Sky), and Mark L. Smith. Executive Producers are Black Bear’s Michael Heimler, Syndicate Entertainment’s Cliff Roberts, and Charles Miller. Black Bear will fully finance the project. STXfilms recently acquired the U.S. distribution rights to the project and will directly distribute the movie in the UK, Ireland, and India.
