Godzilla vs. Kong Stays Atop the Domestic Box Office Despite 58% Drop

Godzilla vs. Kong stays atop the domestic box office

According to Deadline, Adam Wingard’s epic Godzilla vs. Kong has once again dominated the domestic box with another $13.3M in its second frame, bringing in its total to $69.5M. While the week-to-week -58% drop was big, it resembles the pre-pandemic norm for a large-scale pic like this and is actually a decent hold all things considered.

Internationally, the monster extravaganza collected another $24.1M (-66%) to bring its offshore total to $288.3M and worldwide gross to a massive $357.8M. Again, consider that GvK has already stomped past Tenet’s total domestic cume in just two weeks to earn the title of “biggest movie in the pandemic era” and will easily surpass Nolan’s flick international in the next week or so.

GvK has also enjoyed plenty of success on the IMAX format where it has totaled $26.8M, or 9% of its total.

In other words, the MonsterVerse is alive and well.

Elsewhere, Nobody remained in the No. 2 spot with another $2.65M to bring its total to $15.6M and $28.7M worldwide, while newcomers Voyagers and Vakeel Saab failed to make much of a mark in limited release. The former brought in $1.35M from 1,972 theaters whilst the latter scored $411K from 290 locations.

Finally, the R-rated reboot of Mortal Kombat opened in 17 offshore locations and grossed $10.7M from 4,596 screens. Per the report, Russia led the way with $6.1M, enough to make the action pic the largest pandemic opening in the area with totals eclipsing even pre-pandemic numbers. Mortal Kombat opens domestically in theaters and HBO Max on April 23.
