New Thor: Love and Thunder set photos reveal another all-star Asgardian play

SPOILERS BEWARE! As production continues on Thor: Love and Thunder in Australia, a new batch of behind-the-scenes photos and video from the set of Marvel Studios’ highly-anticipated fourth Thor installment have surfaced online (via Daily Mail). The set photos provide us our first glimpse at Matt Damon, Sam Neill and Luke Hemsworth as they reprise their guest-starring roles from Thor: Ragnarok. Check out the full photos and video below!

It also confirms that the Taika Waititi sequel will include another hilarious Asgardian play, which will now adapt the events of Ragnarok. This time Damon, Neill and Hemsworth are joined by another guest star in the form of Oscar nominee Melissa McCarthy. She was enlisted as one of the main characters of the new Thor play, taking on the role of Loki and Thor’s villainous older sister Hela, who was originally played by Cate Blanchett.

Thor: Love and Thunder will be directed by Waititi (Jojo Rabbit) on a script co-written by him and Jennifer Kaytin Robinson (Someone Great), which will be the follow-up to Waititi’s wildly successful 2017 sequel Thor: Ragnarok. Oscar-winner Natalie Portman is set to return as Jane and will now be wielding the mighty Mjolnir. Chris Hemsworth and Tessa Thompson will also return as Thor and Valkyrie, respectively. Academy Award winner Christian Bale (The Dark Knight trilogy) will portray Gorr the God Butcher, the main antagonist in the film. Jaimie Alexander will return as Sif. Guardians of the Galaxy stars Chris Pratt will play Peter Quill, Karen Gillan as Nebula, Sean Gunn as Kraglin and Vin Diesel will appear as Groot in Taika Waititi’s upcoming MCU film.

The female Thor storyline is based on Jason Aaron’s run on “The Mighty Thor” in which a cancer-stricken Jane Foster takes up the mantle and powers of Thor. Thor and Valkyrie were last seen in the highest-grossing film of all time Avengers: Endgame, with the god of thunder entrusting his responsibilities as the King of Asgard to Valkyrie as he joins the Guardians of the Galaxy on their next mission.
