In a recent interview with Empire, filmmaker Christopher Landon revealed his desire to make a third entry to his Happy Death Day franchise, which kicked off with 2017’s Happy Death Day and continued in 2019’s Happy Death Day 2U. He also explained how the threequel would differ from the previous two entries, which should pique fans’ interest.

“I wrote the idea for the third movie some time ago,” said Landon. “I think we’re all excited by it, because it’s different than the other two films, and so we’re really just crossing our fingers and hoping that our fanbase continues to grow – which is something that I’ve really enjoyed watching over the years, seeing more and more people discover both films. So who knows. There might be a time when it makes sense, and hopefully it’s sooner rather than later.”
How is the film different than the other two films, you might ask. Well, Happy Death Day 3 would pick up on a different day, which would certainly take our heroine, Theresa “Tree” Gelbman (Jessica Rothe) in a much different direction. Not only that, but since it doesn’t have to recreate shots from the original film, Landon can spend a little more time on the development side.
“We’re not up against a really difficult clock right now. The other movies were hard, because they were set in the exact same day, so everybody had to look the same, be the same. The pressure is off there.”

Happy Death Day 2U was the follow-up to Blumhouse’s (Split, Get Out, The Purge series) surprise 2017 smash hit of riveting, repeating twists, and comic turns. In the sequel, our hero Tree (Rothe) discovers that dying over and over was surprisingly easier than the dangers that lie ahead. Jason Blum produced and Christopher Landon once again directed.
Happy Death Day grossed $125M worldwide against a $4.8M budget and was a resounding hit with critics and audiences. Its sequel wasn’t quite as lucrative and amassed just $64M worldwide but still managed generally positive reviews.
