Kandahar: Gerard Butler to Star in Ric Roman Waugh’s New Action Film

After working together on last year’s Angel Has Fallen which grossed over $140 million worldwide, Gerard Butler and director Ric Roman Waugh have officially set up their next collaboration with Thunder Road Film’s forthcoming action feature titled Kandahar. Waugh and Butler also worked together on the upcoming disaster thriller Greenland which is scheduled to hit theaters on August 14, 2020.

“It’s rare to find the combination of such undeniable talent like we have on Kandahar with Gerard, Alan, Ric and Basil.” producer Christian Mercuri said in a statement (via Deadline). “Add in an amazing action script and you have a feature film that sets the bar very high. I am delighted to work with the whole Kandahar team and to bring this film to the marketplace.”

According to the outlet, Butler is set to portray the role of an undercover CIA operative named Tom Harris, who is assigned in the Middle East. An intelligence leak dangerously exposes his classified mission and reveals his covert identity. Stuck in the heart of hostile territory, Harris and his translator must fight their way out of the desert to an extraction point in Kandahar, Afghanistan, while eluding the elite special forces hunting them.

Kandahar will be directed by Ric Roman Waugh, who co-wrote the script with former military intelligence officer Mitchell LaFortune. The film will be based on the real-life experiences of LaFortune in Afghanistan during the time of the Snowden leaks.

The film will be produced by Thunder Road’s Basil Iwanyk and Erica Lee alongside Captstone Group’s Christian Mercuri. Rob Moran, Brendon Boyea, and Jonathan Fuhrman are also set as executive producers.
