Reed Morano in Talks to Direct Jennifer Lopez’s The Godmother

According to Deadline, Emmy Award-winning filmmaker Reed Morano (The Handmaid’s Tale) is currently in negotiations to direct STXfilms’ forthcoming biographical crime drama film The Godmother which will be starring Golden Globe nominee Jennifer Lopez as she portrays the role of real-life notorious Colombian drug lord Griselda Blanco.

In addition, Oscar winner William Monahan (The Departed) is also in talks to rewrite the screenplay written by Regina Corrado (Deadwood: The Movie) and Terence Winter (Boardwalk Empire, The Sopranos). Monahan is also working with Morano on another film project for Spycraft Entertainment which is the thriller drama Sabaya starring MCU star Zoe Saldana.

Based on a true story, The Godmother is a captivating new film that chronicles the incredible rise-and-fall of Griselda “La Madrina” Blanco who outsmarted and outhustled the men around her to rise from an impoverished childhood in Colombia to become one of the world’s biggest drug lords who reportedly was worth more than $2 billion, and was a key figurehead in Miami’s ruthless and murderous Cocaine Cowboy Wars.

The Godmother marks the third project between STXfilms and Lopez, who previously collaborated on last year’s successful romantic comedy Second Act and the upcoming Hustlers

The Godmother will be produced by Jennifer Lopez alongside Julie Yorn, Elaine Goldsmith-Thomas and Benny Medina. It will also executive produced by Terence Winter, Alex Pettyfer, Alex Brown and Rick Yorn.

If the deal pushes through, this project would be Morano’s fourth feature film as a director as she previously directed: 2015’s Meadowland which starred Olivia Wilde and Elisabeth Moss; 2018’s post-apocalyptic drama I Think We’re Alone Now; and the most recent one is Blake Lively’s action drama film The Rhythm Section.
