Danny DeVito Approves Colin Ferrell as the Penguin

When Colin Ferrell was cast as the Penguin in Matt Reeves’ upcoming The Batman, there was plenty of excitement to go along with some trepidation. Ferrell, after all, doesn’t really look  the part … at least not in the way the character is typically played. One person who is certainly not worried is the Penguin maestro himself, Danny DeVito, who memorably played the role in Tim Burton’s blockbuster sequel Batman Returns.

While speaking with Fandango while promoting Jumanji: The Next Level, the veteran actor had nothing but praise for Ferrell’s casting: “I think it’s a great thing because Penguin is a great part. Oswald Cobblepot is many, many layers. It’s a very, very difficult task, but I think like many people have played King Lear or Hamlet or anything, I don’t think Oswald should be any different,” DeVito said. “I think everybody should get a crack at him. I think Colin is a terrific actor and I can’t wait to see the twists and turns.”

Reeves’ story has been described as a character-driven project focusing on Batman’s experiences as the world’s greatest detective. The filmmaker has also said to expect a “Rogue’s Gallery” of villains in the movie.
