Garth Davis Eyes Johnny Depp-Produced Shantaram

Garth Davis, who helmed several episodes of the Sundance Channel’s “Top of the Lake,” is in talks to direct Warner Bros. Pictures’ upcoming Shantaram, Deadline reports. The project would mark his feature film directing debut.

Set to star Joel Edgerton, Shantaram is based on the novel by Gregory David Roberts and follows an Australian heroin addict who escapes from a maximum-security prison and reinvents himself as a doctor treating the destitute in the slums of Bombay. His drive to procure medicine leads him into counterfeiting, gun-running and smuggling.

Johnny Depp is producing the adaptation through his Infinitum Nihil alongside Christi Dembrowski and, through GK Films, Graham King.
