The series announced back in March, The Hollywood Reporter today brings word that FX’s upcoming “Fargo” series has scored a leading man in The Hobbit, The World’s End and “Sherlock” star Martin Freeman. He’ll play Lester Nygaard, a similar character to the Jerry Lundegaard role played by William H. Macy in the 1996 feature film.
A 10-episode limited series, “Fargo” is based on Joel and Ethan Coen’s Oscar-winning crime drama. As previously announced, Billy Bob Thornton will play the series’ chief antagonist, Lorne Malvo, with plans for the episodes to explore other “true crimes” in Minnesota.
Adapted by Noah Hawley, the Coens are executive producing alongside Geyer Kosinski and Warren Littlefield. Adam Bernstein (“30 Rock”) is going to direct the premiere episode, which is expected to begin production next month, targeting a spring 2014 debut.
