The Wrap has brought word that Robert Kirkman’s Skybound Entertainment and Universal Pictures are teaming up for a big-screen adaptation of Kirkman’s dystopian sci-fi comic series Oblivion Song. The series was first published in March 2018 and has released 12 issues so far.

Oblivion Song takes place a decade after 300,000 citizens of Philadelphia were suddenly lost in Oblivion. The government has made every attempt to recover them, but after many years they give up. But Nathan Cole won’t. Cole makes daily trips, risking his life to try and rescue those lost, alone and afraid, living in the apocalyptic hellscape of Oblivion. But maybe he is actually looking for something else? Why can’t he resist the siren call of the Oblivion Song?

The script for the film will be penned by Sean O’Keefe, who will have his feature debut in the upcoming Mark Wahlberg (Instant Family)-starring crime thriller Wonderland directed by Peter Berg (Mile 22), which is expected to premiere on Netflix sometime later this year. O’Keefe is also attached to script the adaptations of the 1960s TV series The Green Hornet alongside director Gavin O’Connor (The Accountant) and Watch Dogs.

Kirkman is best known for his work creating the multi-platform hit apocalyptic franchise The Walking Dead, of which there is two TV adaptations, one of which was recently renewed for its tenth season and its spin-off having just premiered its fifth season to very positive reviews from critics. Skybound is also attached for adaptations of its comic series Invincible, with an animated TV adaptation set up at Amazon featuring an ensemble cast and a film still in development, and to a pre-apocalyptic TV series 5 Year, based on a story idea from Kirkman, at eOne.

Oblivion Song will be produced by Kirkman, David Alpert and Bryan and Sean Furst with Universal’s executive vice president of production Jon Mone and director of development Lexi Barta overseeing the project on behalf of the studio.
