The future of Guillermo del Toro’s Pacific Rim is still uncertain. Having underperformed domestically, a sequel’s chances henge upon the film’s foreign box office, where it is luckily doing quite well. The latest box office numbers have Pacific Rim taking in another $53 million in foreign markets this weekend, of which $45 million is from China alone.
Del Toro and screenwriter Travis Beacham have spoken about elements that they’d like to see in the sequel previously, but now CraveOnline spoke with star Charlie Day about what he knows.
I remember when I first met with him (Del Toro) that he liked the idea of Newt becoming a bit of a villain in the second film, Day said. But, I think over the course of making the film, and the way the character resonated with the audience, I dont think he would want to turn him into a villain now, but I really have no idea….Guillermo is one of these guys that his mind is so active that he might have an idea about something and then its a completely different idea five minutes later.
Im hopeful that we get to drive a big punching robot. I think traditionally in those comics, sometimes the science guys put together a cheap, dorky version of one of the robots so maybe well get to do something like that.”
