Stephen Fung to Direct Kickboxer Reboot

On the heels of news this morning that V For Vendetta director James McTeigue has signed on to helm a big screen reboot of the 1988 martial arts actioner Bloodsport comes word, via Deadline, that another Jean-Claude Van Damme original is headed back to the big screen. A new take on Kickboxer is in the works from Radar Pictures and director Stephen Fung.

The 1989 film, directed by Mark DiSalle and David Worth, starred Van Damme as Kurt Sloane, a man out to avenge his brother by learning the Muay Thai fighting style.

Fung, best known for helming the recent Tai Chi Zero, will work from a script by Dimitri Logothetis and Jim McGrath. Logothetis will also produce with Nick Celozzi and Ted Field with Peter Meyer and Mike Weber serves as executive producers.

The original Kickboxer spawned four direct-to-video sequels: 1991’s Kickboxer 2: The Road Back, 1992’s Kickboxer 3: The Art of War, 1994’s Kickboxer 4: The Aggressor and 1995’s Redemption: Kickboxer 5.
