Emma Watson to Headline Fantasy Adaptation Queen of the Tearling

Emma Watson is preparing to board a new fantasy franchise and she’s re-teaming with Harry Potter producer David Heyman to do it. Variety reports that Watson will headline Queen of the Tearling, a feature film version of the first book in Erika Johansen’s upcoming novel trilogy.

Announced by Harper Collins earlier this year, Queen of the Tearling is officially described as follows:

Set three centuries after a small portion of the human race has populated a landmass that mysteriously emerged in the wake of an environmental catastrophe, the series follows nineteen-year-old princess Kelsea Glynn, who must reclaim her deceased mother’s throne and redeem her kingdom, the Tearling, from forces of corruption and dark magic of The Red Queen, the sorceress-tyrant of the neighboring country, Mortmesne.

No writer is currently attached to the adaptation and the book won’t see print until next year, but check back for updates as they become available. In the meantime, Watson fans can catch her in Sofia Coppola’s The Bling Ring, hitting limited theaters tomorrow.
