Eddie Redmayne to Headline Stephen Hawking Biopic Theory of Everything

Eddie Redmayne is eyeing the leading role in Theory of Everything, a biopic of theoretical physicist Stephen Hawking. Deadline reports that the film will center on the relationship between Hawking and his wife (presumably his first, Jane Wilde and not his second, Elaine Mason).

James Marsh, co-director of Man on Wire is attached to direct the Working Title Films project. Anthony McCarten supplied the screenplay and a fall 2013 production is being targeted with a female lead expected to be be announced shortly.

Redmayne is best known for recent projects like My Week with Marilyn and Les Miserables. He’ll soon star in the Wachowskis’ Jupiter Ascending.

Hawking, now 71, has actually played himself a number of times on the small screen. In addition to voicing himself on “Futurama” and “The Simpsons”, Hawking guest-starred last year on “The Big Bang Theory” and, in 1993, played a holodeck recreation of himself on an episode of “Star Trek: The Next Generation”.
