According to Bloody Disgusting, Wild Eye Releasing has set the release date for director Cody Meirick’s upcoming documentary film titled Scary Stories, which centers on the book series that frightened a generation. The film is scheduled to be released on July 16.
The documentary will tackle Alvin Schwartz’s 1980s children’s book series titled Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark. Scary Stories is expected to feature more than 40 interviews from fans and artists along with Schwartz’s family members and other young adult horror authors such as R.L Stine (Goosebumps) and Q.L. Pearce. It will also have more than 20 minutes of bonus footage.

Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark is a three-part anthology series that was illustrated by Stephen Gammell. It is a compilation of short horror stories that were based from folklore and urban legends. First published in 1981, the first book of what became a three-book series (it was followed by More Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark and Scary Stories 3: More Tales to Chill Your Bones).

Currently, the iconic book series is also being adapted into a movie by CBS Films and eOne with Academy Award winner Guillermo del Toro serving as the film’s producer. The film will be directed by André Øvredal which will follow a group of young teens who must solve the mystery surrounding the sudden and macabre deaths in their small town. Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark film will hit the theaters on August 9.
