Indie Studio A24 to Produce Films for Apple

Indie studio A24 has entered a multi-year agreement to produce films for the tech giant Apple, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed.

A24 is best known for its award-winning drama Moonlight starring Mahershali Ali, Trevante Rhodes, and Naomie Harris picked up three Oscars in 2017 for Best Picture, Best Adapted Screenplay, and a Best Supporting Actor win for Ali. Recent projects from the studio include Jonah Hill’s Mid-90s and Bo Burnham’s Eighth Grade.

The partnership with A24 is Apple’s first announcement regarding its plans for upcoming feature films. Recently, the tech giant has focused on greenlighting a number of TV series, including Jennifer Aniston and Reese Witherspoon’s morning-show drama, Steven Spielberg’s reboot of the 1980s sci-fi drama Amazing Stories, and Emily V. Gordon and Kumail Nanjiani’s immigration anthology series.

Apple has not yet revealed distribution plans for their series, or how A24’s films will be distributed. The indie studio usually handles theatrical releases, and they currently have a deal with DirecTV to jointly acquire projects for U.S. distribution.
